Who governs the NCIC?

The NCIC, or National Crime Information Center, is governed by the FBI. This system, which collects and maintains a vast amount of criminal justice information, is a critical tool used by law enforcement agencies across the United States. While the CJIS Advisory Policy Board does provide guidance and recommendations on policies and procedures for the Criminal Justice Information Services division, it is ultimately the FBI that oversees the operation and management of the NCIC.

The Department of Justice is responsible for the enforcement of federal laws and overseeing various programs, but it does not govern the NCIC directly. The Department of Transportation focuses on transportation policy and safety, which does not relate to criminal justice data systems. Therefore, the role of the FBI is central to the functioning of the NCIC, making it the appropriate governing body.
